2001's 'The Smell Of Rain' heralded seismic changes for Emperor alumnus Mortiis. Mortiis stepped up to the microphone as a lead vocalist for the first time, and the album expanded to encompass more live musicians, ushering in a metamorphosis in his sound. Closer to synthpop in parts, the album clutched more tightly onto its industrial rock sensibilities and became significantly more refined and propulsive as a result. It had a lithe groove, subtle catchiness, and a thrumming, murky energy. Looking back now, it was a truly unique release for Mortiis amidst the rest of his discography.

Marvin Gaye always dreamed of being a smooth crooner, "sitting on a stool, possibly behind a piano," delivering velvety songs like Nat King Cole. But Motown had other plans. Pushed between raw R&B and polished pop, Gaye fought to find his own voice, eventually rising to become one of the greatest soul singers in history. Motown Records released the first Marvin Gaye record in 1961 "(I'm Afraid) The Masquerade Is Over", a single intended for (radio) promotion from the singer's debut album. This was followed up by the officially released "Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide" a week later. Gaye scored his first real hit with "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" in 1962, which he had co-written himself, joking about his alleged stubbornness. He found his own unique style with the single released at the end of the year: "Hitch Hike". The foundations were now laid for an enormous series of chart successes: "Pride And Joy", "Can I Get A Witness", "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" and "Ain't That Peculiar" are all Motown classics from 1963-1965 which are still being regularly played today after all these years. The duets he recorded with Kim Weston ("It Takes Two"), especially Tammi Terrell and Diana Ross were certainly at least as good. He scored his biggest ever hit with "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" in 1968. "What's Going On" from the same titled album became a number 1 hit in the USA and the album was received as a masterpiece and is regarded as one of the most important records in pop history. In 1973, the artistically and commercially very successful, "Let's Get It On" album was mainly a musical ode to Marvin's love for his new muse Janis Hunter. His journey continued after a turbulent relationship, addiction and a dramatic creative rebirth in Belgium, where he crafte the global hit "Sexual Healing" in 1982. Marvin Gaye left behind timeless hits, groundbreaking albums, and a legacy that shaped the sound of modern soul. His story, from ambition to artistry, from struggle to brilliance, remains as powerful as the music he created. In the album's new liner notes, producer Chris Thomas recalls how the band found their recording approach almost by accident during an early session. "We put down a track, just rhythm guitar and drums, pretty much first-take, no mistakes. It was impossible to know if it was any good, so, being a bit stumped, I asked Steve if he would like to have a go at putting the bass part on. Instead of playing a traditional bass line, he simply mirrored his guitar an octave lower-an unexpected move that snapped everything into focus. "It was an absolute 'Eureka!' moment," Thomas recalls. "The combination was so powerful, so simple. We bashed three more songs down, adding the bass and double-tracking the guitar in just a couple of hours. We were seriously in first-take territory. "

In 2005, Andrew Bird was a previously unimaginable combination of virtuoso violinist, singer-songwriter, guitarist, and whistler. With that year's album The Mysterious Production of Eggs, his second on Righteous Babe Records, Bird minted a new sound that continues to be imitated and set down classic songs that still anchor many a live performance. The recording sessions lived up to the name when he recorded and scrapped the album three times, traveling between studios in Chicago, Los Angeles and his own home studio on a farm in Northern Illinois. The mystery was solved with the aid of David Boucher, whose studio credits at the time included Paul Westerberg, Lisa Loeb, and Randy Newman. Given that his new album on Warp, Kammerkonzert, is essentially a chamber concerto with Jenkinson himself playing all of the parts it's safe to say he has come a long way since his crystalline drum & bass debut for the label in 1996, Port Rhombus EP. Twenty-one albums in, Kammerkonzert is the start of a new era for Squarepusher as a composer.

Allison and Katie Crutchfield (aka Waxahatchee) have formed a new band called Snocaps. Their 13-track debut album, released digitally as a surprise, will be made available on April 17, 2026 in vinyl & CD formats. An indie-rock record that recalls Allison’s band Swearin’ and Katie’s early records as Waxahatchee, Snocaps was born out of the twin sisters’ desire to work on music together as they had in their teens and twenties. Allison and Katie are backed by friends and close collaborators Brad Cook and MJ Lenderman. The album was produced and almost entirely engineered by Cook, and all four musicians play multiple instruments across the record.

If it happens - a big if - it does so naturally, and perhaps nobody knows that better than Band of Horses, whose landmark debut Everything All The Time still, after twenty years, feels as vital and, dare we say, transcendent as when it came out in 2006. Guitarist/vocalist Ben Bridwell formed Band of Horses in Seattle in 2004, after the end of his nearly ten-year run in northwest melancholic darlings Carissa's Wierd. Carissa's Wierd trafficked in beautiful orchestral pop, whose songs told unflinching stories of heartbreak and loss, leavened with defeatist humor. Band of Horses rose from the ashes of that well-loved band, buoyed by Bridwell's warm, reverb-heavy vocals, and woodsy, dreamy songs oozing with tension, longing and hope. 'S Make It, recorded in 1964 and released the following year on Limelight, captures drummer Art Blakey leading a transitional edition of his Jazz Messengers. The sextet featured Lee Morgan (trumpet,) Curtis Fuller (trombone,) John Gilmore (tenor saxophone,) John Hicks (piano,) and Victor Sproles (bass.) The first LP released on Ray Charles' Tangerine Records imprint in 1963, Jimmy Scott's Falling in Love is Wonderful exists as one of the most mythic albums in vocal jazz. Due to contract disputes with his former label, Scott's Tangerine debut was shelved shortly after it was released - much like it's Atlantic Records follow-up, The Source - and went un-reissued for decades. Ultimately, Scott, a favorite of his contemporaries like Ella Fitzgerald, never became the star he should have been, but this album remains his masterpiece: A loving, tender collection filled with Scott's masterful work around a ballad.
When you name your band Prince Daddy & The Hyena, you sort of accept that chaos isn’t a chapter in your story – it’s the entire ethos.
Since forming out of Albany, NY’s DIY scene, Prince Daddy & The Hyena have built a career out of reaching their breaking point and continuing forward anyway. Their first LP, produced by Joe Reinhart, captured a very young band figuring things out in real time; their massive conceptual undertaking Cosmic Thrill Seekers followed and pushed their ambition (and patience) to new extremes. Not long after, a serious van accident nearly took their lives, directly informing the intensity of their self-titled record. Over the last decade, the band has lost close friends and collaborators, endured relationship struggles, and faced countless moments that would have ended most bands without question.
But those experiences never slowed Prince Daddy & The Hyena down. On their upcoming fourth album, Hotwire Trip Switch, they recalibrate and reconnect with their roots while sounding more focused and self-aware than ever. Reuniting with Joe Reinhart for the first time in nearly a decade, the album pulls from the punchy lineage of Green Day, the hook-driven quirk of Weezer, the snarky urgency of Joyce Manor and Jeff Rosenstock – all through the distinctly bratty lens of songwriter and vocalist Kory Gregory. He’s backed by an airtight band including guitarist Cameron Handford, drummer and vocalist Daniel Gorham, and bassist Jordan Chmielowski. The album’s title comes from a lyric on the track “Crash Taylor,” and captures the chaotic, unstable, and sometimes unsafe energy that Prince Daddy & The Hyena thrive in. Ultimately, Hotwire Trip Switch is an album about surviving on borrowed time and borrowed electricity, pretending like somehow, that’s a sustainable approach to life.
Despite being known for crafting full-length experiences and hiding easter eggs between tracks, Hotwire Trip Switch was written as Prince Daddy’s first-ever “singles” record. Kory purposefully went into the writing process with a mission to actualize entire visions between the beginning and ending of individual songs, rather than relying on the context to click only during a full album listen. Without the added pressure to connect the dots, the result is some of the band’s catchiest and most instant material to
date.
Across the album’s 12 tracks, Hotwire Trip Switch shows off drastically different sides of Prince Daddy & The Hyena where exaggerating and experimenting are simply tools for sharpening and zeroing in on each song’s vision. “Big Box Store Heart” is his warped attempt at writing a love song, inspired by the loneliness of going grocery shopping without his partner. “24-03-04_Birthday_B4” was written and finished in a single, mushroom-fueled day that Kory calls his “best birthday ever.”
In the end, Hotwire Trip Switch doesn’t attempt to escape the chaos that seems to follow Prince Daddy & The Hyena like a shadow. Instead, it embraces it – wires running hot, pushed past their limits, and somehow still charging forward into whatever comes next. The vinyl is a 12" LP in a standard jacket with a double-sided insert including album lyrics and credits. -----

Metric’s relentless pursuit of timeless songwriting and fiercely independent ethos have cemented their place as one of the most essential and ahead-of-the-curve bands of the last two decades. The trailblazing Toronto outfit was founded by songwriting and production partners Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw, along with bandmates Joshua Winstead and Joules Scott Key. Andrew Stockdale, founder of Grammy-winning act Wolfmother and creator of hits like "Woman" and "Joker & the Thief," has built a career on towering riffs and vintage hard-rock swagger. Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing. Africa/Brass, released in 1961, was John Coltrane's first album for Impulse! Records and a turning point in his recorded output. Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's studio and produced by Creed Taylor, the project expanded Coltrane's working quartet into a large ensemble, pairing his searching tenor and soprano saxophone with dense, brass-heavy orchestrations by Cal Massey. Arrangements by Eric Dolphy and McCoy Tyner helped shape the album's distinctive sound, weaving tuba, euphonium, French horns, and more into a powerful backdrop for Coltrane's improvisations. With key contributions from trumpeters Booker Little and Freddie Hubbard, bassist Reggie Workman, drummer Elvin Jones, and others, Africa/Brass reframed the idea of a "big band." One of the most important early Impulse! Releases, Africa/Brass announced Coltrane's arrival on the "house that Trane built" with radical clarity. Verve Acoustic Sounds Series is remastered from the original analog tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl.
