Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever

It's rare that a band's debut album sounds as confident and self-assured as Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever's Hope Downs. To say that the first full-length from the Melbourne quintet improves on their buzz-building EPs from the last few years would be an understatement: the promise those early releases hinted at is fully realized here, with ten songs of urgent, passionate guitar pop that elicit warm memories of bands past, from the Go-Betweens' jangle to the charmingly lo-fi trappings of New Zealand's Flying Nun label. But don't mistake Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever for nostalgists: Hope Downs is the sound of a band finding its own collective voice.

Sometimes the catalyst for creating great art is simply being in the right place at the right time. For Arthur Buck, the new collaboration between singer-songwriter Joseph Arthur and guitarist Peter Buck, that place was Mexico, and that time was the fall of 2017.  Specifically, a little town off the Baja coast named Todos Santos, with the Sierra de la Laguna mountains to the east and the bright blue Pacific stretching out infinitely to the west. It is here that Buck has, for the last several years, held the Todos Santos Music Festival, which he created with his wife, Chloe Johnson, in 2012, shortly after R.E.M. called it a day. Among the many artists who have played the festival is Joseph Arthur, who also happened to leave behind a guitar—a Dobro, specifically—after his last appearance there. And so last year he made the trek down to Todos Santos to pick up the instrument. Which is where he ran into Peter Buck.

That was the beginning of Arthur Buck. The creative result of this relationship is a vibrant 11-song collection that captures the spontaneity at the heart of the project—right down to the 1-2-3-4 count off from Buck that opens the record—with sounds and styles meshed together in an easy, almost playful manner. Tchad Blake was brought in to mix the proceedings, and the result is the new Arthur Buck—the result of a shockingly productive burst of inspiration.

Call The Comet [LP]

New Vinyl: $28.98 Buy

Recorded with his band in Manchester at Marr's Crazy Face studios, 'Call The Comet' is the third solo record from the Smith's guitarist and follows 2013's critically acclaimed The Messenger and 2014's Playland; both of which made the UK top 10. "Call The Comet is set in the not-too-distant future" says Marr, "and is mostly concerned with the idea of an alternative society.  It's my own magic realism."  Songs include Actor Attractor, Walk Into The Sea, Bug and recent live favourite Spiral Cities.  "The characters in the songs are searching for a new idealism, although there are some personal songs in there too.  It's something that people like me can relate to." Says Marr.

Post Traumatic

New CD: $13.98   $12.58 Buy

In the months since the passing of Linkin Park vocalist Chester Bennington, Shinoda has immersed himself in art as a way of processing his grief. With no agenda, Shinoda hunkered down alone in his Los Angeles home and began writing, recording, and painting. In January, he released the Post Traumatic EP consisting of three deeply personal songs - each one a powerful, stream-of-consciousness expression of unvarnished grief - accompanied by homemade visuals that Shinoda filmed, painted and edited himself. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with New York Times stating "The tracks are reverberant electronic dirges; the rhymes, heading into sung choruses, testify to bewilderment, mourning, resentment, self-pity and questions about what to do."

Following the EP release, Shinoda continued to create, and the result is the upcoming Post Traumatic, a transparent and intensely personal album that, despite its title, isn't entirely about grief, though it does start there. "It's a journey out of grief and darkness, not into grief and darkness," Shinoda says. Ultimately, Post Traumatic is an album about healing. The songs, though specific about Shinoda's experience with loss, manage to be universally relatable, thanks to their honesty and heart. "If people have been through something similar, I hope they feel less alone," he says. "If they haven't been through this, I hope they feel grateful."

Melody's Echo Chamber (aka Melody Prochet) has confirmed her second album, Bon Voyage, will be released on June 15th on Fat Possum Records. Made up of seven expansive tracks, Bon Voyage marries Melody's breathless soprano to the wildest sonic excursions, always pinned to an emphatic, clattering groove as she delivers her fables of spiritual search and emotional healing in multiple tongues (French, English and Swedish).

Bon Voyage is a collaborative record between Prochet and Dungen's Reine Fiske and The Amazing's Fredrik Swahn with Melody sculpting and producing the sessions as well as encouraging the players around her to experiment, often with instruments that might be less familiar to them. It also features special guests Gustav Esjtes and Johan Holmegaard (both from Dungen) and Nicholas Allbrook (Pond).

Sorpresa Familia [LP]

New Vinyl: $21.98 Buy

Facing the sort of obstacles that might, understandably, derail a fledgling band's career, MOURN instead forged ahead, and in typical fashion managed to harness their swirling anger, frustration, and passion from the past 2 years into new music. Now, only just recently freed from their legal binds, MOURN is back in full force to share their 3rd full-length album, Sorpresa Familia. Ironically, the obstacles and injustice MOURN have faced in recent years has provided a fertile foundation for new songs that display a palpable maturity and evolution, while retaining every bit of the fiery angst and attitude that has shaped their sound from the start.  Chock full of tension and pent up frustration, Sorpresa Familia feels tonally right at home within MOURN's catalog. But it also feels distinctly separate - more refined, more intentional. Railing against greedy businesses, exploitation, fake friends, dishonest figures of authority, and ever complicated global politics, it's an album of decidedly higher stakes than their past outputs, delivered with the newfound poetic grace of a band rising up out of the ashes of those who stood in their way.

Following last year’s release of the critically acclaimed Domino debut, RELATIVES IN DESCENT, PROTOMARTYR are happy to announce CONSOLATION E.P., an EP of brand new material recorded in collaboration with KELLEY DEAL (THE BREEDERS) and MIKE MONTGOMERY (R. RING, AMPLINE). Recorded in MONTGOMERY’S own studio, Candyland, the EP’s four songs capture the breadth of mood and stylistic variety of a full-length PROTOMARTYR album - from the short sharp shock of the opener “Wait”, through the mutant pop of “Same Face In A Different Mirror”, the epic “Wheel of Fortune”, to the beautiful closer “You Always Win”. Add to this MONTGOMERY’S recording skill, KELLEY DEAL’S unparalleled vocals, and their arrangements that see the inclusion of Jocelyn Hatch (viola), Evan Ziporyn (bass clarinet), and Lori Goldston (cello), and CONSOLATION E.P. becomes a truly unique prospect in PROTOMARTYR’S discography.

Magic Gone [LP]

New Vinyl: $19.98 Buy

On June 15th, Pennsylvania’s Petal will release ‘Magic Gone’, a 10-song declaration of personal liberation and a look into the mind and soul of singer/songwriter Kiley Lotz. “’Magic Gone’ is the physical and sonic representation of me ghting for my right not only to survive but live all while coming to terms with encroaching adulthood,” says Lotz. “I was a closeted queer person struggling with chronic mental health disorders; terri ed that if I tried to deal with these two major issues in my life I would lose ev- eryone and everything I loved. Coming out was the beginning of a long and continuing process of self-actualization, of taking a hard look at myself and the problems I had and how I could x them. This record is the result of being the most honest I have ever been in my life, and the constant battle of overcoming the thought that, “maybe if I were just someone else completely, everything would be better.” ‘Magic Gone’ is about letting go of the anger induced by all the paranoia, anxiety, guilt and pain, and embracing the magic of your own endurance and hoping for the best.”

New CD: $13.95   $12.55 Buy

R+R=NOW is a collective of like-minded boundary-breakers featuring Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Derrick Hodge, Taylor McFerrin & Justin Tyson. The “R+R” in the band’s name stands for Reflect+Respond, and was inspired by Nina Simone who said an artist's duty is to reflect the times. With Collagically Speaking the band presents an urgent musical hybrid that is distinctly of the now. As Glasper says, R+R=NOW tells “our story from our point of view… It’s a very honest, fluid sound that rings of hip-hop, EDM, jazz, at times – hell – reggae... a bunch of cats that respect each other so much that we always pass the ball.” The album features guest spots by Omari Hardwick, Terry Crews, Stalley, Amanda Seales, Amber Navran, Goapele, Jahi Sundance and Yasiin Bey.

Culture Abuse

“I was just waiting ‘til I could get out and play music for the rest of the world,” says David Kelling, songwriter and front man of Culture Abuse. Bay Dream, Epitaph’s first full-length release for the band, offers up ten impeccably-crafted songs full of personal and universal lessons. And the best advice is simple and practical. “Be kind to the bugs, be conscious of others, be careful with drugs, be kind to yourself even though it gets hard,” Kelling sings out clearly over searing, rhythmic guitars provided by John Jr and new addition Nick Bruder on “Bee Kind to the Bugs.” Together with Shane Plitt on bass and drummer Ross Traver the band provides the same strong rock foundations and memorable, critical lyrics as their debut, Peach, but Bay Dream travels to exciting new territory for the five-piece. New territory makes sense, as Kelling has relocated to Los Angeles from San Francisco, and the songs read like open letters to both the cities and the people in them. Where Peach dealt with being in the middle of painful times, Bay Dream is about getting through them to find the sweet times are even sweeter. If Bay Dream is any milestone of where the band is going, there are clearly more good things up the road.

Tim Armstrong

TIM ARMSTRONG, guitarist and frontman of RANCID, took a different path on his 2007 solo debut, with able backing from L.A. reggae revivalists the Aggrolites, ARMSTRONG crafted a grooving, fun-filled modern reggae album, influenced by ska, rock steady, roots reggae, and dancehall and filtered through a modern pop-punk attitude. The sound of the record (nimble, jumped-up, and retro but fully modern) impresses instantly, but as the record goes on, ARMSTRONG’s voice emerges as the star. His raspy croon, staccato toasting, and ragged shout fit the reggae sound surprisingly well.

Free Rein [LP]

New Vinyl: $21.98 Buy

Fourteen years into an effervescent career, California reggae band and touring juggernaut Rebelution remains abundantly creative. Its members (singer/guitarist/lyricist Eric Rachmany, keyboardist Rory Carey, drummer Wesley Finley, and bassist Marley D. Williams) are as focused and committed as they are easygoing and laid-back. And they haven't lost a step since Falling Into Place, their 2016 studio album, became the band's fourth release to top the Billboard reggae chart, earning them their first ever Grammy nomination in the category of Best Reggae Album. Ever expanding and reaching wider audiences, the Rebelution phenomenon continues to spread good vibes on tour, and in the studio.

Free Rein, their sixth studio album, while still rooted in the Jamaican inspiration that Rebelution's songs and sounds have always paid homage to, takes experimental leaps and new adventures too, welcoming old fans and new audiences alike. The musicians collaborated with Jamaican artists on three of the 12 new tracks. Don Corleon (Sean Paul, Rihanna) produced Rise On Top, a pointed reflection on celebrity and ambition; and Winta James, producer for Damian Marley and Chronixx, worked with the band on Settle Down Easy; and City Life, two songs that reflect a more confessional perspective.

Celebrate, the new album's opening track, nods to the classic Rebelution sound. It has special meaning for the band too. In their long months on the road they've met fans with health struggles who've said that their music has helped them get through tough times. An energizing shout-out to one and all, the song celebrates the oneness of artist and audience.

Patience, a reggae-R&B hybrid, is another hymn to human connection, a haunting message from the well of romantic love: Maybe isn't good enough / I'm patient, I ain't giving up…Can I be your everything and more?

Other tracks take a wider perspective. City Life is one that hits home for Rachmany. There are moments, he says, speaking for urban dwellers everywhere, when I just want to get out and find some solitude and find the beauty of mother nature. The uptempo groove conveys the positive energy of this universal desire.

The band remains in touch with the traditions that it builds on. Much of the style, the songwriting, and the quality of the instrumentals derive from Jamaican roots, says Rachmany, stressing what an honor it is that producers from reggae's birthplace signed on to work with Rebelution.

Gene Clark

For longtime Gene Clark fans and aficionados, the tracks on this remarkable archival release are the stuff of legend. Since word first spread in the 1980s about the discovery of these 1967 recordings on a rare acetate in Liberty Records’ vaults, fans have come to regard Gene Clark Sings For You as nothing less than the Holy Grail of the singer-songwriter’s extraordinary body of work. Shrouded in mystery and the subject of much speculation and conjecture, few have ever had the opportunity to hear these forgotten gems from one of Gene Clark’s most prolifically creative periods. Until now. —from the liner notes by John Einarson, author of Mr. Tambourine Man: The Life And Legacy of The Byrds’ Gene Clark Finally available, the legendary Gene Clark Sings For You acetate appears on CD, 2-LP, and Digital June 15, 2018. In addition to the Sings For You 8 songs, this new release also features an additional five demos from a second acetate lent courtesy of The Rose Garden’s John Noreen, as well as one further demo of the song “Till Today.” The Rose Garden acetate and the “Till Today” demo were submitted to the band, The Rose Garden, with whom Clark had grown close, for consideration for their debut Atco album (also being reissued in expanded form at the same time as Sings For You). Produced for release by Grammy®-winning producer, Cheryl Pawelski with restoration from Grammy-winning engineer, Michael Graves, this historic release features previously unseen photos and an essay by Gene Clark biographer, John Einarson.

The Rose Garden

• The most expansive collection by The Rose Garden ever. • 14 previously unissued tracks, including 5 live performances. • Liner notes by Gene Clark biographer, John Einarson feature new interviews with the band. • Previously unseen photos. “In December 1967, Los Angeles folk-rock quintet The Rose Garden’s debut single ‘Next Plane To London’ rose to #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 national singles chart. A month later the single topped the Canadian RPM chart. Considering the stiff competition at that point, along with the odds stacked against them as an unknown new band, The Rose Garden members can feel justifiably proud of their accomplishment. ‘Whether we’re remembered as a One Hit Wonder or not doesn’t matter,’ insists Rose Garden drummer Bruce Bowdin. ‘We certainly were where the action was and had the time of our lives. I have no regrets or anything to apologize for. Our record is still played on the radio.’” —from the liner notes by John Einarson, author of Mr. Tambourine Man: The Life And Legacy Of The Byrds’ Gene Clark (Backbeat Books) Expanded for the very first time, The Rose Garden’s sole album finally gets the deep-dive examination it deserves with A Trip Through The Garden: The Rose Garden Collection. Beyond the twelve tracks released in 1967 (the original ten-track album and two songs from a post-album single release), this newly restored and remastered CD adds 14 previously unissued tracks. They include five live tracks recorded in August of 1967 at Chaminade High School in Canoga Park plus studio outtakes, acetate tracks, and a special rehearsal. A special note, being released at the same time is the Gene Clark Holy Grail, Gene Clark Sings For You which serves as a companion to A Trip Through The Garden: The Rose Garden Collection. Clark was involved with The Rose Garden after leaving The Byrds and furnished them with an acetate of songs to choose from for their self-titled album. They chose “Long Time” which appears on Gene Clark Sings For You. They also chose “Till Today” which appears in demo form on Gene Clark Sings For You, and as an acetate version and rehearsal on A Trip Through The Garden: The Rose Garden Collection. Released with the full approval and cooperation with both the Estate of Gene Clark and The Rose Garden, A Trip Through The Garden: The Rose Garden Collection is produced for release by Grammy®-winner, Cheryl Pawelski with restoration and mastering by Grammy®-winning engineer, Michael Graves, plus liner notes featuring new interviews with the band by John Einarson, author of Mr. Tambourine Man: The Life And Legacy Of The Byrds’ Gene Clark (Backbeat Books) and previously unseen photos.
