Metz - Strange Peace

Metz - Strange PeaceMETZ - Strange Peace - Sub PopMetz - Strange Peace
Since releasing their self-titled debut record in 2012, which The New Yorker called, “One of the year’s best albums…a punishing, noisy, exhilarating thing,” the Toronto-based 3-piece METZ have garnered international acclaim as one of the most electrifying and forceful live acts, touring widely and extensively, playing hundreds of shows each year around the world. Now, Alex Edkins (guitar, vocals), along with Hayden Menzies (drums), and Chris Slorach (bass) are set to unleash their highly-anticipated third full-length album, Strange Peace, an emphatic but artful hammer swing to the status quo. "The best punk isn't an assault as much as it's a challenge — to what's normal, to what's comfortable, or simply to what's expected. Teetering on the edge of perpetual implosion,” NPR wrote in their glowing review of METZ’s 2015 second album, II. Strange Peace was recorded in Chicago, live off the floor to tape with Steve Albini. The result is a distinct artistic maturation into new and alarming territory, frantically pushing past where the band has gone before, while capturing the notorious intensity of their live show. The trio continued to assemble the album (including home recordings, additional instrumentation) in their hometown, adding the finishing touches with longtime collaborator, engineer and mixer, Graham Walsh. Strange Peace isn’t merely a collection of eleven uninhibited and urgent songs. It’s also a kind of sonic venting, a truculent social commentary that bludgeons and provokes, excites and unsettles. With all the pleasurable tension and anxiety of a fever dream, Strange Peace is equal parts challenging and accessible. It is this implausible balancing act, moving from one end of the musical spectrum to the other, that only a band of METZ’s power and capacity can maintain: discordant and melodic, powerful and controlled, meticulous and instinctive, subtle and complex, precise and reckless, wholehearted and merciless, brutal and optimistic, terrifying and fun. “Their whiplash of distortion is made with precision, a contained chaos. But you would never talk about them like that. Because METZ are not something you study or analyze,” wrote Liisa Ladouceur in Exclaim! “They are something you feel: a transfer of energy, pure and simple.” In other words: to feel something, fiercely and intensely, but together, not alone.

Shout Out Louds - Ease My Mind - Merge Records
In their 15 years as a band, Shout Out Louds have toured the world many times. The band played a show in the Brazilian rainforest with a freezer box for a dressing room. They once performed in Yokohama, Japan, for an audience of two Austrians. They played in a Sicilian rainstorm so heavy they had to shake out their instruments afterwards, with the soaked backdrop left hung to dry on a hotel façade. The music sites will remind you that the band have performed for David Letterman and Jay Leno and toured with The Strokes during their heyday, but most importantly, they have released four albums of brilliant pop music. Ease My Mind, the band’s fifth full-length, is a welcome return from these Swedish pop masters. After the departure of drummer Eric Edman who played on 2013’s Optica, the band recruited Lars Skoglund, known for his drumming with Lykke Li. One could say that Shout Out Louds returned to their roots. They recorded the album with Fredrik Swahn (from the band The Amazing) who filled the band with such new energy that they were willing to commute to the ’burbs during the darkest months of the year. He was joined by Måns Lundberg who produced the song “Souvenirs” and Axel Algmark who produced “No Logic” and “Angel.” After a three-year break for family life and side projects, Adam, Bebban, guitarist Carl von Arbin, and bassist Ted Malmros decided to focus on Shout Out Louds once again. This was an active choice—as it has to be, perhaps, to keep going after having already spent half a lifetime together. The four band members have been friends since high school and grew up together as colleagues and travel companions. You never get to know someone as closely as you do when you’re crammed together in the same touring vehicle, mile after mile. Are the band members more like siblings or an old married couple, then? “We’re more like siblings than anything else. We all know what everyone else hates about ourselves at this point,” they all agree. “We all have sides that are easy to make fun of. We play because we enjoy it so much, but we’ve also done this for half our lives. We’ve learned not to take everything to heart, and to just go for it.” The title of the second track, “Paola”—Bebban’s given name—was chosen by Adam as a tribute to the band members’ longstanding friendship. He explains, “It’s about a time in our lives before we started the band. It’s about finding a different way of living than the one you came from. Choosing another path. I had different lyrics for it at first, but then I felt like the album needed a song like this one.” Adam and Bebban write: “The world is a different place now than it was in the beginning of the 2000’s. We didn’t grow up very aware of political messages in music and probably didn’t feel much of an urgent need to understand the world around us, in that sense. However, that has changed over the years. The world has seemed extremely dystopic and frail for quite a while now, and having children and getting older forces you to open your eyes to issues more devastating than heartbreak and feeling lost. But in our music, we still allow ourselves to address things the way we always have: through emotions rather than analysis. Music as a means of escape, a need to take a break from feeling petrified with fear. Ease My Mind is a lot about that for us.”

Cut Copy - Haiku From Zero - Astralwerks
Cut Copy return with their first studio album in 4 years, Haiku From Zero. In the past decade, the GRAMMY Nominated band has become an international act, headlining massive sold-out tours and festivals including Coachella, Ultra, Lollapalooza, Primavera, Pitchfork and more. Their high-energy live show is matched by the beautiful complexity of their songs with nods to many genres cleverly combined to create indelible pop songs. The new album showcases a band in full command of their powers to move people both emotionally and physically.

YUSUF / CAT STEVENS - The Laughing Apple

YUSUF / CAT STEVENS - The Laughing AppleLeon Russell - On A Distant Shore [Indie Exclusive Deluxe Edition] - Palmetto Records
Leon Russell turned 74 years old in 2016. At the time, he’d already logged more than half a century onstage, weaving a legendary path through the worlds of rock & roll, soul, country, blues and classic pop music. He was still active in the recording studio, too, where he spent much of the year working on a new album, On A Distant Shore, during breaks in his busy touring schedule.  On a Distant Shore arrives 10 months after Russell’s passing. It’s his final album, offering up a stunning batch of original material — including updated versions of three hits from his older catalog — all influenced by the timeless sounds of the Great American Songbook. These aren’t cover songs. Instead, they’re Russell’s own version of pop and jazz standards, filled with sweeping strings, upright piano, pedal steel, horns, and a voice that retained its powerful, poignant punch until the very end.  This collection of songs will be released in two configurations, a 12 song CD, and an Indie Exclusive Deluxe Edition of 16 songs, including 4 additional songs+lyric booklet.

Enter Shikari - The Spark

Enter Shikari - The SparkEnter Shikari - The Spark - PIAS AmericaEnter Shikari - The Spark
In fifth album The Spark, Rou, Chris Batten (bass), Rob Rolfe (drums) and Rory Clewlow (guitar) have written a soundtrack to our tumultuous world; a record for everyone who’s filled with frustration, but hasn’t lost the capacity for hope. “The spark is a new connection, a new beginning,” says Rou. “It can be short and insignificant, but it can create something so significant. The spark is that light at the end of the tunnel – when everything seems to be falling apart, but you’re able to see some sort of path out of the dark.” Produced by David Kosten (Everything Everything, Bat For Lashes), it’s Enter Shikari's most melodic album, invigorated by the energy they felt as a band after a sold-out 2016 arena tour, and one that will see them break beyond punk to be recognised as a great British band in a lineage spanning The Beatles via Pink Floyd and Joy Division to Blur. “We’re here to disgrace that list or be embraced into that list, I haven’t decided which yet,” Rou grins.

Otherwise - Sleeping Lions

Otherwise - Sleeping LionsOtherwise - Sleeping Lions - Nettwerk RecordsOtherwise - Sleeping Lions
Otherwise release their third, full-length album, Sleeping Lions. The band has been on tour this summer, playing some of the new tracks from the album to live audiences prior to the release. The group believes that the title captures their essence in a way that touts who they are as artists, and how they have evolved. “We named the album Sleeping Lions because that’s what we feel like — we’ve been hibernating in our neon desert cave, licking our wounds and regaining our strength for the hunt,” says Otherwise frontman Adrian Patrick. “Now we’re back on the prowl again, and our eyes are wide open. The album title absolutely references a bigger awareness of who we are and what we’re capable of. The last thing you ever want to do is wake sleeping lions.” The 12-track offering runs an emotional gamut that parallel real life struggles. Among the suggested highlights in the press materials include the blistering “Angry Heart,” the more heartfelt “Blame,” the gut punch of “Bloodline Lullaby,” the chaos of the relationship-based “Monster” and the symphonically emotional “Nothing to Me.”

THE TEXAS GENTLEMEN - TX Jelly

THE TEXAS GENTLEMEN - TX JellyTHE TEXAS GENTLEMEN - TX Jelly - New West RecordsTHE TEXAS GENTLEMEN - TX Jelly
The Lone Star-bred collective, The Texas Gentlemen, takes its cues from some of the iconic acts of the past — the quicksilver brilliance of The Wrecking Crew and Bob Dylan’s one-time backers The Band are the most obvious examples. Founding member, Beau Bedford, who shares chief engineering and production responsibilities at Dallas’ Modern Electric Sound Recorders, assembled The Texas Gentlemen as an all-purpose backing band for an eclectic array of singer-songwriters, including Leon Bridges, Nikki Lane, Jonathan Tyler and Paul Cauthen. That deft fusion of what came before with what is right now develops through the members’ unswerving dedication to simply play to the best of their abilities, trusting their instincts, and letting the music guide them. Case in point: TX Jelly was created in less than a week — four days, start to finish — at Muscle Shoals’ singular FAME Studios. Pared down from the 28 songs the Gentlemen recorded in that 96-hour span, TX Jelly effortlessly connects way back to what’s next, summoning the spirits of American songcraft even as it heralds the arrival of 21st century talent. Cut live, with little use for the blinding polish and careful presentation of so much modern music, TX Jelly oozes with skill backed up by that hard-won authenticity. TX Jelly moves between contemplative and raucous, encompassing the full breadth of the American experience. The music touches on blues, soul, folk, country, rock and gospel — from first track to last, you can feel The Texas Gentlemen reaching deep inside themselves and finding what’s genuine — what illuminates the truth of the country’s rich, complicated and singular artistic history — and delivering it the only way they know how: real, raw and righteous.

Otherwise - Sleeping Lions

Otherwise have announced the release of their third, full-length album, Sleeping Lions, set for a Sept. 22 release.
